A groom nearly died after a first dance fiasco that left him fighting for his life in hospital, and other wedding day disasters that brides dread.
Mike Snell was hoping for a romantic first dance with his wife Cerise when he looked around to see wedding guest Gemma Barratt enthusiastically running towards him. The Dirty Dancing track ‘The Time of my Life’ was playing and Mike realised Gemma wanted him to catch her in the Dirty Dancing style lift, like Patrick Swayze did with Jennifer Grey in the movie.
Mike reacted by attempting to lift Gemma over his head, but instead the pair crashed to the floor causing Mike’s knee to snap and bend in the wrong direction. The groom was rushed to hospital and was devastated to find out that almost every ligament in his left knee was torn. As Mike needed intensive reconstruction surgery the newlyweds were forced to cancel their honeymoon in Jamica.
Things went from bad to worse when Mike developed a serious infection and almost died from blood poisoning. He pulled through but was informed this month that the infection had actually ‘eaten away’ some of the replaced ligaments. A year on and Mike is doing better and is out of hospital in time to celebrate his first wedding anniversary this weekend on 27th July. He said:
The doctors said the infection was so bad if I had been an older fella, I wouldn’t have been there. Whenever I go to the hospital, I’m a legend there – they call me The Dancing Guy.”
Mike’s wife Cerise has the following words of wisdom for wedding goers:
“If I had any advice for wedding guests it would be to leave the groom to his bride and leave the moves to the professionals.”
Mike and Cerise are not the only couple to suffer a wedding day disaster. Check out our top five wedding disaster stories…

5. The groom burned down the venue
Property developer Max Kay set fire to plush Peckforton Castle in Cheshire following a disagreement over a bar bill. Venue owners had threatened to cancel his wedding three days before the event unless he paid up £15,000 outstanding.
