A couple from Antrim planned wedding around Euro cup qualifier football match yesterday
Yesterday was a special day for Stephen and Alison Rodgers for two reason – they became husband and wife, and watched Northern Ireland qualify for the Euro 2016 finals.
Football fans Stephen and Alison planned their wedding around the all-important game where Northern Ireland took on, and beat, Greece. The Carrickfergus couple arranged for the historic match to be played live on a big screen at their reception and scheduled their first dance for the half time break.
Prior to the match Stephen told the BBC:
The plan is we’ll have the meal and then the match kicks off. At half time we’ll have our first dance and then the second half of the match and then just party the rest of the night.”
The couple gave guest Mark Gamble the go ahead to leave their wedding to attend the match. He said:
I’ve been going to Windsor Park for years and years. I can’t miss the match tonight – the wedding is important, but the match at Windsor tonight is very important.”
Northern Ireland beat Greece 3-1 with a nail biting game at Winsdor Park. Steven Davis scored twice and striker Josh Magennis scored once.
