Wedding Journal takes a look at recently revamped wedding reception venues and finds out what’s new for couples celebrating a wedding in 2016 and beyond
Bishop’s Gate Hotel, Londonderry
Exclusive, chic and stylish, the Bishop’s Gate Hotel is a brand new wedding reception venue located in the heart of the walled city of Derry/Londonderry.
The hotel is actually an A-listed building that dates back to 1899. It features elegant Edwardian architecture and opulent furnishings that were restored to suit modern taste while paying homage to the rich culture of the building.
The hotel features 31 luxurious guestrooms, three suites, a residents’ lounge, fitness area, restaurant, champagne and cocktail bar and the 100-person capacity Northern Counties Ballroom.
The venue has a number of local cathedrals and churches on its doorstep for couples to choose from, and the city walls provide plenty of photo opportunities.
Couples can create their own bespoke wedding package or choose from one of the all-inclusive options.
The Wool Tower, at Raceview Mill Broughshane
On Sunday 26th June, The doors of the 200 year old Wool Tower at the beautiful Raceview Mill in Broughshane swung open, starting a new chapter for the historic building as a fresh and exciting wedding venue.
There are no packages at the Wool Tower and each wedding is completely different. Original features include vaulted brick ceilings, massive pine beams, polished stone floors and stone walls. The Wool Tower also boasts a massive Juliet Balcony, pretty enclosed courtyard garden, an upstairs terrace, and a Riverside Butterfly Path for unforgettable photos. Located just 40 minutes from Belfast, the venue can easily accommodate 80 to over 200 guests.
The Ivory Pavilion, Antrim
The Ivory Pavilion, Antrim is situated in the walled garden of the charming Galgorm Castle. The venue offers five options for wedding ceremonies; in the 17th chapel, in the natural surrounds of the garden, outside in the castle forecourt, in the grand drawing or dining room.
Bespoke wedding packages are created to suit your needs, set menus are not available as the focus is very much on creating a ‘Personal Food Experience’ based on the personal preference of the couple.
The venue works with with leading on-site wedding suppliers to make your wedding planning as stress free as possible, partners include including a professional photographer, beautician, florist, dentistry, bridal boutique and even a cosmetic dentist.
Glenlo Abbey Hotel, Galway
Galway’s five-star Glenlo Abbey Hotel recently completed an extensive two-year renewal and refurbishment programme.
The €2 million revamp saw the main house and 50 bedrooms being completely transformed. Underfloor heating was installed in the 18th century manor house, the interior was painted in light tones, and work was carried out on the gothic style windows and wooden beams.
The Corrib Banqueting Suite underwent a total makeover and was furnished in subtle tones and shades of gold.
This popular wedding venue opened a new wedding garden with a gazebo that offers panoramic views of the estate; a picture perfect spot for outdoor wedding photos. A new terrace overlooking the walled garden was also added and is ideal for outdoor drinks or barbeque at a summer wedding.
The Oak Cellar bar now contains a luxurious new lounge, and the Pullman Restaurant was tastefully restored to its former glory.
The Galgorm Resort & Spa, Galgorm
Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa, the Galgorm Resort & Spa has undergone extensive refurbishment.
The Antrim hotel located in lush parkland with the River Maine flowing through the estate provides a serene setting for wedding parties.
The refurbished Great Hall features a stunning new reception area with parquet flooring, solid oak doors, and a feature bar with marble and gold accents. Exceptional interior design elements create a chic country house atmosphere.
The hotel recently unveiled a £11 million Thermal Spa Village offering guests a world-class spa experience. State-of-the art facilities include log-fired riverside tubs, a snow cabin, new sauna and steam rooms.

Belleek Castle Hotel. Mayo
This romantic 19th century Irish castle wedding venue in Mayo is currently undergoing a total refurbishment of the stables and courtyard area, work is due for completion later this summer.
The newly developed courtyard will provide a quaint, picturesque location for wedding photos with the enchanting Belleek Castle backdrop. Plans are in place to develop an elegant outdoor seating space where wedding guests can relax, mingle and toast the newlyweds in the sunshine – weather permitting of course.
The refurbishment work will reflect the Neo-Gothic style of architecture of the castle with local limestone being used throughout. Access to the new courtyard will be from the medieval banquet hall wedding reception area and also from the front of the building.
Hotel Woodstock, Clare
Situated on 155 acres of Clare countryside, this four-star hotel re-opened for business in last summer. The banqueting suite has been revamped with the introduction of two magnificent chandeliers, plush carpet, a new dance floor and soft furnishing. The lobby features a new polished marble floor and comfortable couches where your wedding guests can enjoy a drink on arrival.
The refurbished swimming pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, provide the perfect place to indulge in pre- or post-wedding relaxation.
Ten Square Hotel, Belfast
Located in Belfast’s vibrant city centre, the contemporary Ten Square Hotel has undergone quite the overhall. Only steps from Belfast City Hall, this stylish city centre wedding venue is actually housed in an 1860’s building.
Recent renovations saw the introduction of the lavish Linenhall Suite reception venue. Two new bars were added to the suite which has the capacity to host 250 wedding guests. Hotel bedrooms were redecorated also.
Ten Square Hotel is officially licensed to hold civil ceremonies and wedding packages start from £50 per person.
