The Bride has cold feet

If the bride-to-be wakes up with cold feet on her wedding day and suffers from a serious case of pre-wedding doubts the couple’s risk of divorce more than doubles according to a study in the Journal of Family Psychology . On the plus side, pre-marital doubts from the groom-to-be don’t appear to have any effect on the success rate of the marriage whatsoever.

You get married after the age of 32

New research shows that prior to age 32 or so, each additional year of age at marriage reduces the odds of divorce by 11 percent. However, after 32 the odds of divorce increase by 5 percent per year.

You have two daughters

If you have a daughter, you’re nearly 5 percent more likely to divorce than if you have a son according to a report in the Daily Beast.

This figure multiplies with the numbers of daughters or sons. “We think it happens because fathers get more invested in family life when they have boys,” says Stephanie Coontz, author of Marriage, a History and director of research for the Council on Contemporary Families.

Your parents are divorced

It’s been well documented that children whose parents divorce are themselves more likely to divorce than those whose parents’ marriage remains intact.

If your parents divorced, you’re at least 40% more likely to do the same. But if they got remarried, you have a staggering 91% likelihood of getting divorced.

Your child has ADHD

Results indicate that parents of a child diagnosed with ADHD in childhood were more likely to divorce and had a shorter latency to divorce than parents of children without ADHD.

In fact parents who have to deal with a child’s ADHD diagnosis are nearly 23% more likely to divorce before the child turns 8.

You have money problems

Money worries can cause serious marital stress. Newlywed couples who take on substantial consumer debt become less happy in their marriages over time.

You frowned in pictures as a child

Yes it’s true, people who frown in photos are statistically five times more likely to get a divorce than people who smile.

One of you smokes

When only one person in a relationship smokes, they’re 75% to 91% more likely to split than smokers who are married to another smoker.

Why? “Different values and lifestyles can be problematic,” says Rachel Sussman, a licensed psychotherapist and relationship expert.

You were pregnant before you got married

If you first child is born less than eight months after the wedding it makes you 24% more likely to divorce.

You cohabited before you got married

A National Heath Statistics Report showed that premarital cohabitation contributed to the delay in first marriage for both women and men. It also revealed that is has been well documented that women and men who cohabit with their future spouse before first marriage are more likely to divorce than those who do not cohabit.

You’re in a job with a high divorce rate

Certain occupations have higher divorce rates.  According to a 2009 study in the Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology the five occupations with the highest divorce rates are dancers and choreographers (43.05%), bartenders (38.43%), massage therapists (38.22%), gaming cage workers (34.66%), and extruding machine operators (32.74%).

You earn more than your husband

Marriages where spouses earn roughly the same amount are more prone to divorce than those where the wife earns less, according to a Swiss study of U.S. couples.

If the wife makes 60% or more of the family income, the risk of divorce is double that of couples where she doesn’t work at all.

You are older than your husband

Women who are one to three years older than their husbands are 53% more likely to end their marriage according to an Australian report. The study suggests it may be “due to differences in values
associated with birth control, or marital strain caused by power imbalances within the union.”

You think you’re better than your husband

Researcher John Gottman claims to be able to predict a couple’s chances with 93% accuracy and says the “kiss of death,” is contempt and seeing your partner as beneath you.

“It’s constant anger and disgust, passive-aggressive digs, eye-rolling, and yelling at your partner,” says Sussman. “When couples do that in a session, I say the research shows that if you keep doing that, there’s a really good chance you’re going to get divorced.”
